Do you use bumpers? Why or why not?

We decided to use one. We felt the risk of injury to Patrick was much greater than him pushing his face against it. I am SO GLAD we did! He is now turning himself sideways in his crib and pushing against one side with his legs, pushing his head into the other side.

Yep, heated topic, but I think we're all mature. Smile

no we don't- and the girls get their legs or arms sort of tangled in the slats every now and then (Especially seeing as they are both still in one crib!) but to me it is worth the inconvenience to me to get up and fix it than to worry about the smothering and/or choking hazard! We actually just started using blankets every once in awhile (Seriously, maybe 1x a week). I am picky as hell about what sheets I use, too- they have to be the complete wrap around ones

I might be being silly here lol but what's the risk with bumpers? My mum made Noah some custom ones when he was a baby which secre to the cot sides top and bottom so that the bottoms aren't swinging about. I have never really thought of it being a risk, but I guess they could cause smothering if a baby rolls over onto it and then can't roll back. When the boys were that small though, they were in a Moses basket full time which doesn't have bumpers to worry about. I have never heard of any cases over here where a child had sustained injury or smothered themselves nor have I heard a health visitor or midwife say they aren't safe so would be interested to see what others have to say Smile

There's a big thing here about a link to SIDS with bumpers...just before Patrick was born, stores actually started pulling bumpers from their bedding sets, so we rushed out to buy our set with the bumper. Mine tie on top and bottom all the way around the crib, and DH has it so tight I don't think Patrick could do anything to it.

I find it amazing that news from one country to the next can be so different in terms of safety and child care. As far as I'm aware, the media over here hasn't covered anything like this and it's link to SIDS though I can see why possibly a baby could strangle or suffocate themselves if they aren't secure.
Certainly made me check the bumpers on Williams cotbed last night lol!

I think they are safe if they are fitted well and when the time comes I will be using them as the though of the baby getting a limb stuck and they break it trying to free themselves also freaks me out.

you have to consider that the risk of smothering and SIDS related deaths TRIPLES for twins- so anything and every thing I could do to lower those numbers, I was all over! And I would much rather take the miniscule risks of them getting a limb stuck than them smothering. And if you think about it, how hard and for how long would a baby have to struggle to free and arm or a leg before BREAKING it? I don't thank in this day and age any of us leave our infants the way they used to before bumpers were invented to prevent that- believe me, if my girls even get a toe out through the slats they let me know! lol

LO was in a carry cot up until he was too big (i think 3 months old) but we used bumpers from then right up until recently. Tied top and bottom and he STILL managed to get his leg stuck in the bars. Rolling Eyes (we need a facepalm smiley. lol)

IMO they're no more dangerous than baby sleeping bags. After all, if the sleeping bags are the wrong size LO can wriggle down into them and smother themselves.

But then I suppose I'm not the best person to give an opinion, LO has slept with a muslin cloth since around 6 weeks old. I'm such a bad mum. Wink

Since it's not talked about across the pond, I thought I'd give you ladies a link to one of the many, many articles here.
